Ideas...

  • 'Glamorous dead' - beauty of the dead body.  Shoot idea: body in grave/coffin/body-bag that then gets up (video), someone sitting on their memorial e.g. bench. Use overlay technique to keep them on the bench but leaving at the same time.
  • Relationship between death and the mind - could use video and audio so the audio expressing regrets or concerns whilst imaging the body as if it had died
  • Eyes - only seeing the eyes then uncovering the face to see something unexpected e.g. ugly or shocking - the eyes being the windows of the soul, beautiful eyes could be hiding all sorts!!
  • Seaside - standing by the sea with the waves crashing/moving, or hair/clothing moving.  Hand coming up out of the sand 'buried alive'.  Benches.
  • Being in a state of relaxation around people in public and observing reactions - body guards? Mark Jenkins style.Shoot idea: busy street in London or on the tube
  • Being in a state of relaxation and overlaying with something contrasting e.g. someone watching or stalking you and you having no idea such as the same people you commute to work with every morning etc.
  • The relationship between your mind and your body when you have a difference with your mind e.g. someone with schizophrenia

A trial to see what an overlay video is going to look like and the type of shots that might work well together.

Burden of Proof

I visited the Photographer's Gallery at the weekend and found myself incredibly inspired by the exhibition 'Burden of Proof'.  I must of spent a good hour wandering around the first floor in which the focus was real life crime photography that was once in fact hard evidence in courtrooms as well as recreations of more recent crimes/attacks.

I noted some visitors around me that day commented on how 'disturbing' and 'horrifying' some of the photos were - especially those from the 19th century that were in fact real life crime scenes with real dead bodies.  Nevertheless, I found the photos rather haunting and artistic - they were so raw.  It got me thinking about the idea of mindfulness again, and what the relationship the body has to the mind after death.

The Eternal Landscape - Joely Marshall

What if the thing that constrains us or ties us down is not chains or ropes or any obvious thing like that but instead so beautiful we do not see it for what it is?

What does the mind look like?

Forget your physical appearance.  Forget what you look like when you look in the mirror.  Forget all those aesthetic little qualities about yourself, and simply look within yourself - now, what do you look like?  What do you really look like?  Your mind is something only you know, only you have been to it's deepest darkest corners.  So, if you could see your mind, what would it look like?

My mind wanders in all directions thinking about what it would look like if I could visually see it.  I imagine something alien though, something that no one has ever seen before... something that doesn't necessarily make sense to a third party.  The beauty of this though is that it would be my own interpretation of my own mind, and therefore it doesn't need to make sense to anyone else.

Paraphrasing Arnold Schwarzenegger

If we do what everyone else is doing we will be like everyone else. If we want to be different we need to do something different :)

The Theory Of Everything

Just watched this and maybe if anything an absolute demonstration of the separation between the body and mind. So sad, or is it? That the mind can still function at an extremely high level in spite of the weakness of the body.
